Why are internal systems so outdated?
With so much going on in the world of software, if one skilled company started putting out internal management systems for insurance/real estate firms they could make A KILLING. I know we would buy it in a heart beat. An IMS with the look and feel of modern day widgets and social software would boost moral, productivity, and user interoperability within the office space. There are tens of thousands of brokerage houses across the nation (only talking domestically) which can all use the same system because they all source the same major carriers. Not to mention, the basic forms (Accords apps, title forms, mortgage forms, etc...) are all universal and set by the regulators so a skeleton would simply need to be built that incorporated these forms electronically into a cool, streamlined, user friendly platform that would be customizable by the client.
Not to mention, with the low cost of development today as compared to years ago, there is not doubt in my mind such an application could be sold at a discount to the current competition. Additionally, it could be written to work with windows 7, live mesh, Max OS 10, and other platforms that allow you to work across multiple computers/mobile devices.
Having to come to the office every day just to access your database is RIDICULOUS. There is a great deal of value in developing for commercial users, someone needs to identify this opportunity in more detail, step away from the general consumer software development space, and pursue this idea. Especially since consumer software development (i.e. The App Store) is such a saturate market.
Evernote

There is something to be said about data/image/text cataloging
Evernote is a fabulous application. It is an amazing application that allows you to catalog data/information/images you interact with on a number of various formats. Similar to a bookmark; however, you are not limited to what you find on the internet. You can catalog mobile images, jpgs, uploaded videos, etc... all sorted and capable of being search for using evernote's advanced search technology.
Check it out. EVERNOTE

Problems with endless aid and entrepreneurial solutions

There has been quite a bit of writing recently on African aid and the implications of continued aid to developing countries. There are two arguments and I am of the belief that continuing aid (without a termination date or exit strategy) hinders economic development, contrary to the popular belief that aid is beneficial to the country receiving it.
Now, before I put my foot in my mouth, let me say that I am not discrediting the value of helping others, especially those who are suffering. However, I think the approach to helping those people needs to be changed and viewed with the goal of creating change from within rather than sustainability from the outside.
If you give a child an allowance of 100,000 dollars a month they wont work a day in their life until they need more than 100,000 dollars a month, a day that for most will never come. The same can be said for aid to developing countries. The belief that constantly and continuously providing to developing will spur economic growth is an oxy moron. The saying that giving a man a fish is not as valuable as teaching him to fish (sorry I'm not one for famous cliches) could not apply more.
I believe that the correct approach is to teach the entrepreneurs within the target country to make their own change. Providing them with capital and/or the resources to do so is acceptable as long as such aid has a set limit or maximum amount as well as a terminal date beyond which the entrepreneur must be sellf sustainable. Almost like seed funding or angel investing seen domestically, when you fund a new idea, concept, or change, it must have a cap on the funding you give it. Issuing a blank check does no good to anyone because of the moral delima associated with doing so.
African economist, Dambisa Moyo, agrees with my thoughts and has made some interesting remarks regarding aid to Africa. Although Africa is not the focus of my thought stream necessarily, teachings from Africa can be applied to aid anywhere in the world.
Dambisa also wrote the book Dead Aid: Why Aid is Not Working and How There is a Better Way for Africa, an expanded thought process of this topic and a great read.

Open Thought Stream on Paperless Books
There a few reasons why I think that paperless books would be successful in education:
- Students rarely highlight and annotate books the way the used to because they desire to sell the books back at the end of the summer to redeem some of the money they spent on the books. Keep in mind, this payback is often less than 10% of the original purchase price.
- Plain and simple, text books are expensive, averaging the mid 100's and often times more than 300 dollars.
- Electronic Text Books or Text Book for that matter, would require a single purchase or at most one initial purchase followed by a series of very small purchases in order to download and update content each semester.
Anyways, I don't plan on pursuing the design of such an application for now but I really believe there is a huge amount of opportunity. Imagine the introduction of a cheap version of the technology in developing countries. The ability to make one purcahse, or recieve one donation*** which would allow for constant and continous content update could create educational opporutinies for 1000's of underprivledged students without the need for continued aid (the very subject of my next post)

A quick note on Windows 7
With that said, Windows 7 has completly elminated my desire to purchase a mac. My opinion of Windows 7 is, "Borrowed from Mac, Innovated by Apple." The user interface is nearly seemles; however, you can still perform all of the complicated sourcing you can with old Windows.
The amount of performance increase I have seen over Vista is unreal. My computer is running more efficiently than it did in the days of XP professional. Currently, I'm updating my iphone, downloading safari updates, running outlook, running 5 panes of Mozilla, and running blogger buddy and I don't notice a difference from running 1 program. Keep in mind, this is on a Thinkpad T-60 bought in early 2006. Given the T-60 is a good machine, excellent machine at that, it has never run this smoothly.
Not relevant to my usual posts, but I had to comment.
Good job Microsoft, your starting to get it.

Explanation of Tech Surveys
So, with no further ado:
I'm helping a friend of mine with a Tucson based start-up company. The survey is designed to identify trends in teen populations who actively use "add on" applications on online social networks and smartphones.
The goal is to use these trends to design and implement the start-up business plan. We are hoping to have a good amount of accurate data regarding the use of these add-on applications before launch in order to accurately target the appropriate market.
The survey will be distributed at a number of college campuses and will be taken by students who attend those colleges.
Of course, if you would like to volunteer to take the survey you are more than welcome to and your support is greatly appreciated.
Mexico’s Need For Social Entrepreneurship

There has been a great deal of talk about the recent problems in Mexico. A recent blog post by Chris Nelder on Get Real List summarizes the scope of the problem pretty vividly:
"An estimated 10,000 people have died in the violence since Mexico's president Felipe Calderón took office in 2006 and began a campaign against organized crime. Over 6,000 died last year alone, of which about four-fifths were criminals killing criminals, plus about 800 police, soldiers, prosecutors and other officials who dared to fight organized crime. Another 1000 have already died in 2009.
The atrocities committed are brazen and horrific, including torture, beheadings, and public displays of mutilated corpses. Gangs hang banners in the streets announcing their views, make public threats against officials, and make YouTube videos of their executions. Extortion and protection rackets are proliferating as the federal crackdown has splintered the cartels into warring factions. The nation's framework of 32 independent states, a decrepit judicial process, and an ineffective and disorganized federal police force have left the nation with a corrupt law enforcement system that is ill-equipped to control the cartels."
It is clear that Mexico is in dire need of a solution; however, I fear that the solution comes in the form of social entrepreneurship and given the lack of safety and protection within Mexico, entrepreneurship is arguably at an all time low. The current focus in Mexico, be it the private, public, or illegal sector, is on profit. The government continues to seek foreign investment to ramp up oil exports (the country's #1 export) while private companies, such as Telemex, continue to focus on bolstering profits across the nation and, of course, the cartels are increasing exports of illegal drugs and increasing the amount of foreign guerilla operations in the US, Canada, and Central America to increase their profits as well.
Consequently, increasing the profits amongst the drug cartels limits the ability for the public and private sector to increase their profitability. The reason for this inverse relationship is that the drug cartels are expanding their enterprise through violence, vandalism, and murder, making Mexico less appealing to foreign investors. Because the government limits oil export and a number of other industries to domestic ownership, foreign investment in those companies is crucial. However, with human mutilation and beheading becoming everything but commonplace, domestic operations will surely lose their ability to raise fresh capital.
In my opinion, the problem spurs from a lack of opportunity. In 2006, the poverty rate in Mexico, based on assets, was more than 40%, now in 2008 that rate has been cut by more than half. Where is the money coming from? Drug exports. Drugs are bringing money to Mexican citizens in ways that no other enterprises are. As more and more citizens seek opportunity and financial success they turn to the cartels and illegal trade as the answer. Mexico's corporate governance leaves little room for new enterprise and provides little financial promise for domestic entrepreneurs. The decrease in the poverty rate is not a reflection of better times and healthier living; it is a reflection of the increase in drug exports.
How do you solve the problem? The answer has many facets but I believe one key is decreasing the focus on profitability and increasing the emphasis on social responsibility. There is no black and white division between profit-based entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship. If the government allowed foreign companies to operate within Mexico on a large scale those companies could dump money back into the Mexican market, increasing opportunity, and making legitimate changes to the poverty rate. I believe that the majority of the population does not desire to work with or associate with the local cartels and given abundant opportunities, cartels would see a massive reduction in support and membership.
The Mexican government needs to accept that their domestic system is deteriorating as a result of increasing cartel influence and a need for foreign investment interest (which I believe they have already done). In order to combat these trends the government needs work with foreign enterprise to bolster domestic markets, increase legitimate jobs, and more than anything, provide attractive alternatives to drug trade. The government could then work with these companies to build socially based programs with focus on bettering the Mexican population.
I think military action is required to limit the cartel's current actions which are horrific; however, I think a long term solution to the problem must attack the root, which is lack of opportunity, and I don't think that solution is one of guns and metal.
